TECHNIQUE + HEART

How do we keep our dancing fresh? Contact Improvisation offers so much freedom and yet it is easy to get stuck in habits or lost in what we think the dance “should” be. In this workshop we have 2.5 days to explore moving with a sense of ease in body and mind, feeling more connected to your self and your partner, allowing emotional resonance, finding flow. From this space we will challenge our bodies to find new pathways, moving the dance beyond the familiar. Work with “upside down” material like handstands or hanging and sliding down with the head first will encourage us to move off the beaten tracks and become more skilled in the richness of detail. In my experience it is the combination of precision and heart that lets me find more variety in the dancing, more sense of journey and exploration – and a more alive jam space.

The workshop welcomes people who have a sense of the basics of CI and wish to go further and deeper. And, as always, long term practitioners will appreciate working within limitations and the brilliant principles of the form to find new exploration and discovery. Plus I’ll be sharing some language and phrasing I have been exploring in my teaching to help students find the heart in their practice, without losing the skill.

Contact Improvisation New Years Retreat

I am so grateful for the combination of focussed moving and connecting through the dance in the studio and sharing more life together in the beautiful nature of the Hillier Retreat during very long lunch breaks with the option to camp.

Again in this special time of the year! The gap after the Christmas and New Year’s busyness, before normal life kicks in again.
It will be a nourishing , grounding and inspiring start into the New Year.

What do we get in touch with when we allow time to arrive … in the body, the dance, the connection to others and in the group?

Contact Improvisation will be our main language. Basic techniques and principles of the form around leading & following, sharing weight and some lifts will anchor our journey.
I might propose a more specific theme closer to the Retreat or it might emerge through our dancing.

Soft & wild … this is coming from a person who is passionate about deep listening, slow somatic work, effortlessness in mind & body – someone who doesn’t like forcing and pushing.

In my own dance a soft and slow approach lets me find the inner connectedness and trust with others to eventually move fast, to find my strength, make quirky choices, challenge myself and the predictable flow to go juicily beyond sense making.

I want to invite this quality while keeping the space safe enough. There is some animal quality that I’d like to ignite, where softness, availability and openness stay present when the dance embraces the wild and untamed.

Somatic work and technical essentials of CI will strengthen our shared vocabulary.

The Workshop will give inspiration for long term practitioners and is also welcoming for people who already have a sense of the basics of CI and want to go further and deeper. If in doubt check in with us

Joerg is a dancer and passionate movement teacher, deeply interested in learning and the question ‘what is it that makes us feel connected?’ – on many different levels. He is one of the leading figures in Europe in the field of Contact Improvisation, and has been teaching for more than 25 years, offering training programmes and organising festivals. SENSING THE DIFFERENCE

Bewegung bewegt mein Inneres, berührt mich, bringt etwas in mir zum Schwingen. Was geschieht, wenn wir von der puren Bewegung eintauchen in die Wahrnehmung dieser Bewegung und von dort erahnen, was sie in
uns bewegen. Ich wünsche mir diese inneren Resonanzen als unablässige Entdeckungsreise, wo wir mitbekommen, wenn Bewegungen mit Geschmack und Textur gefärbt sind und als unterschiedlichste Lebendigkeiten erfahrbar werden.
Sensing the difference: Wo gelingt uns das? Wir werden uns mit Polaritäten beschäftigen, mit denen wir in der Contact Improvisation vertraut sind: steigen & sinken, ausbreiten & einsammeln, Ausrichtung nach vorne oder hinten, unterstützen oder gehalten sein. Sie eröffnen uns vielfältige Contact technische und improvisatorische Möglichkeiten. Ich bin neugierig vertraute ‚Pathways‘ und Übungen mit dieser Wachheit neu zu erleben. CI-Technik im ‚Seins’-Modus. :)
Zunehmende Wertschätzung hege ich für Unbequemes, habe Passion für Details & forschendes Lernen und verstehe Gruppenbezüge als Grundlage für vertieftes individuelles Erleben.

Die Teilnehmenden sollten mit CI-Prinzipien und -Technik sehr gut vertraut sein und in offeneren Formaten ihren Weg finden können.

A vision from Katja Mustonen often resurfaces in my dancing and teaching:
“I wish to be available at any moment with all my body parts for multiple directions.” I find this an intriguing proposal for consistently having enriching and satisfying dances.

My primary approach to finding greater availability in my dance is by calming the busy mind and softening into the body’s liquidity – like water, always ready and willing to flow in all possible directions. And there is also another kind of availability, one with a higher tone: a readiness in the body and an alertness in the mind, prepared for, even expecting the unpredictable. How do we engage the muscular system to transform effort into juicy strength, without losing that fluid, water-like availability? How do we get the pelvis ready to follow in all directions – also against gravity? How do I access the willingness to run, jump, and fall? And when is it actually time to not be available? When do I need to retreat, to rest, to disconnect from others and potter around in my own bubble?

The end of February is a special time. We’ve grown weary of the long winter and the first signs of spring are beginning to emerge. We’ll feel more of that and we can embrace this shift by supporting one another in activating our bodies and minds. I envision flow, strength, quirkiness, questioning habits, spaciousness, fun, and depth as flavours for our time together. My wish is for an explorative, supportive space that holds us in our humanness, welcoming whatever each of us brings to the day.

Participants should be very familiar with Contact Improvisation technique, which will be our common language for this Intensive. In case of doubt, check in with us.
